Guido Kanschat reviews several discontinuous Galerkin schemes for elliptic and viscous flow problems. Setting out from Nitsche’s method for weak boundary conditions, he studies the interior penalty and LDG methods. Combined with a stable advection discretization, they yield stable DG methods for linear flow problems of Stokes and Oseen type which are applies to the Navier-Stokes problem. The author not only presents the analytical tehcniques used to study these methods but also devotes a major discussion to the efficient neumerical solution of discrete problems.

Much has been written on the theory of discontinuous groups and automorphic functions since 1880, when the subject received its first formulation. The purpose of this book is to bring together in one place both the classical and modern aspects of the theory, and to present them clearly and in a modern language and notation. The emphasis in this book is on the fundamental parts of the subject. The book is directed to three classes of readers: graduate students approaching the subject for the first time, mature mathematicians who wish to gain some knowledge and understanding of automorphic funct

The text offers an introduction to the key ideas, basic analysis, and efficient implementation of discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods (DG-FEM) for the solution of partial differential equations. All key theoretical results are either derived or discussed, including an overview of relevant results from approximation theory, convergence theory for numerical PDE’s, orthogonal polynomials etc. Through embedded Matlab codes, the algorithms are discussed and implemented for a number of classic systems of PDE’s, e.g., Maxwell’s equations, Euler equations, incompressible Navier-Stokes

Selected lectures by international experts, discussing current problems and developments in the numerical modeling of cohesive-frictional materials. Fills a gap in the exchange of information between engineers and scientists engaged in this type of modeling research, with both a microscopic and macroscopic description of the materials.

A major problem in control engineering is robust feedback design that stabilizes a nominal plant while also attenuating the influence of parameter variations and external disturbances. This monograph addresses this problem in uncertain discontinuous dynamic systems with special attention to electromechanical systems with hard-to-model nonsmooth phenomena such as friction and backlash. Ignoring these phenomena may severely limit performance so the practical utility of existing smooth control algorithms becomes questionable for many electromechanical applications. With this motivation, Disconti

This is an introductory textbook on isometry groups of the hyperbolic plane. Interest in such groups dates back more than 120 years. Examples appear in number theory (modular groups and triangle groups), the theory of elliptic functions, and the theory of linear differential equations in the complex domain (giving rise to the alternative name Fuchsian groups). The current book is based on what became known as the famous Fenchel–Nielsen manuscript. Jakob Nielsen (1890–1959) started this project well before World War II, and his interest arose through his deep investigations on the topolo
